When you see vendors selling fresh coconut in Rishikesh, usually around Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula, would you believe that the coconut is spiritually and symbolically one of the most valuable fruits on the planet?
Much could be said about the coconut as it has a lot of significance in Indian culture and cuisine. It is an essential ingredient in many dishes, whether sweet or savoury.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, it is predominant in the sweet taste, has a cooling effect on the body and also a sweet post-digestive effect. It balances pitta and vata (but in excess can aggravate kapha).
From a Western perspective, coconut is gluten-free, alkaline, high in saturated fat and fibre. It also contains protein and some important minerals like calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium.
About its spiritual meanings, another time. Stay tuned!
